Background of Solid Waste
The existence of mankind and the development of civilization, for the last few centuries, has led to the complex environmental problems such as Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Solid Waste Generation, Destruction of Flora & Fauna and so on. We have taken the issues such as Air Pollution Control, Water Pollution Control, Protection of Flora and Fauna, quite seriously and as of date, well established procedures and practices are in place. “Solid Waste” is one of the much neglected areas, which needs attention and to be given a serious thought by each and every individual. We only know, to generate the solid waste, be it in the form of waste food, vegetable & fruit peelings, waste paper, packaging, plastics, old shoes/ toys, e-waste such as CDs, non-working MP3 players, old mobiles, electric switches and so on. This needs to be collected and treated and disposed scientifically. Else, it will affect our air, water sources, flora & fauna. Also, a simple thinking in managing our solid waste, can lead to better economic and environmental benefit to the mankind.
In 1865, a German Scientist by name Mr. Justus Von Liebig (Father of Fertilizer Industry), who made major contributions to agricultural and biological chemistry, wrote to the Mayor of London that “Based on the Condition of Thames – that the two problems of the pollution of the cities with human and animal excrement and the depletion of the natural fertility of the soil were connected and that Organic Recycling that would return nutrients to the Soil was an indispensable part of a rational urban-agricultural system.
